- Description
- Aim: An international outreach placement was developed by the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 2016, for final year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy programme. The placement was implemented to provide students with a 'real world' experience of treating paediatric patients in underserved areas of Cambodia. The purpose of this study was to identify how the placement influenced the development of the student oral health therapists' clinical, professional and personal skills. Methods: Convenience sampling was used to select final year Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy students. Sampling produced a study size of n=12, resulting in a tutor to student ratio of 1:6. Pre-and post-questionnaires consisting of Likert scales and open questions were used to collect student feedback on the placement experience. Results: Eight (67%) students completed both pre- and postplacement questionnaires. The Likert scales and open questions indicated students gained confidence in all clinical, professional and personal focus areas. Conclusion: This small study provided valuable insight into the influences of an overseas placement on the positive development of students clinical, professional and personal skills.
